Tips for Leading a Great Chant Experience

Leading people into a meditative, prayerful experience of sound and mantra is a skill that anyone can acquire. We'll share a couple of key tips that will help increase the chances of your participants to experience a "magic moment" with the mantra.

  1. Start with something personal.
Take 1 minute to let people know why you're offering the event. If you have something personal or vulnerable to share, even better, as it'll start the heart connection even before you start singing. For example... "My daughter is on military duty in Afghanistan right now, and I wanted to gather our community to send vibrations of peace around the world. Though she and the people in conflict there can't hear us, I hope they might be able to feel us as some soft voice of peace in their hearts. I invite you to think of someone in your life, or some situation, who could use an infusion of peaceful vibrations before we start..."
  2. Express humility.
Especially if you're not trained in Sanskrit pronunciation or mantra, start with a humble admission of your skill level.
  3. Teach the mantra.
At a skill level appropriate to your audience. If they've never heard of Sanskrit mantra before, just do call and response. If they're a bit familiar, introduce 1-2 of the pronunciation points you learned in the video. (Refer them to the Global Chant Circle if they'd like more instruction!)
  4. Acknowledge them.
It really helps people relax out of performance anxiety and into the sweetness of the experience when you tell them they're beautiful.
    "You sound great!"
    "Aaahhh... yes!"
  5. Give invitations.
After your participants get comfortable chanting the mantra itself, and you've made a few heartfelt acknowledgements make a few invitations for them to deepen their experience. A few of our favorites during Heart of Sound chant experiences are:
    "Relax your jaw open!"
    "Chant with your full heart!"
"Can you sing like no one is listening?"
"Let your voice be an instrument of LOVE!"
"Make it a prayer; send this to someone who needs it!"
  6. Use volume dynamics.
Chanting at the same volume for a long time can get monotonous. Start off in a medium voice, and guide the group to louder or softer volume according to your inspiration.
