Honestly, I developed the Heart of Sound training because it was what I was looking for my whole life, but never found. I studied music since I was 10 and went to India seeking “enlightenment” when I was 19...
After my father died when I was 29, I realized how short life can be, and I dove back into my deepest love: MANTRA
I spent my 30’s largely in India, studying intensely. I found teachers who held pieces of the Sanskrit, mantra, and nāda yoga puzzle, but no one who embodied the whole-being, embodied mystic approach that made my heart sing.
I spent over a decade of my life and got myself into tens of thousands of dollars of debt, passionately trying to penetrate into a direct experience of the Divine!
At the urging of my teachers and mentors, and with their hearty blessings and support, I created the Heart of Sound, to bring together the essential aspects of the sound yoga practice that had become profoundly therapeutic and devotional for me:
So I started teaching from my appointed role as a bridge between the East and West, helping the global chant community identify blind spots of cultural appropriation and bring in greater reverence for tradition… while simultaneously trying to avoid the dogmatic approach that has turned my generation of Indians off of “tradition.”
It’s all centered around one thing: EMPOWERMENT
Empathetic listening is a superpower and here’s how you do it. When someone says or does something that you really don’t agree with or rubs you the wrong way, that’s your cue. Listen beneath the surface of their words or actions to put yourself in their shoes.
What are they feeling? What’s alive in them?
And what are they needing?
What kind of beautiful, universal yearning may they be having?
Even if you can totally disagree with their strategy, totally disagree with their “come from” that doesn’t matter.
What matters is that you are exercising the superpower of listening… it’s like turning on your listening ears to go below the surface to what is alive in them.
Cultivate listening to what is alive in you, and practice expressing it authentically in community.
Non-violent communication is the yoga of sound playing out in our daily lives & relationships.
