The perimenopause journey can feel like a wave of unpredictability — emotionally, mentally, and physically. Yet, through the gentle and transformative practice of sound medicine, you can discover a surprising sense of clarity and empowerment.
The main benefit of sound medicine for this perimenopause period is this:
The ability to identify what is a real concern and what is unnecessary looping of an inflated or irrelevant issue.
In other words, sound therapy helps you hear yourself more clearly — distinguishing between what truly needs your attention and what’s simply noise.
Think of the sound yoga therapy you layer into your day as a micro-spa date with yourself. Even if you don’t have time to rest completely, a shift in mindset and tone of voice can do wonders to make this challenging time just a little bit easier… maybe even empowering and liberating.
Mantra is THE yoga for the mind!
When your thoughts feel like a whirlwind, chanting can anchor you in calm presence. The repetition of sound steadies your breath, clears mental clutter, and helps you return to center.
A therapeutic approach to sound allows you to embrace whatever is alive within you — giving yourself permission to go inward and rest without shame. Instead of seeing this season as something to fear, you begin to experience it as an empowering and rejuvenating transition.
Specific mantra sounds create subtle vibrations that stimulate different areas of the brain. In the yogic traditions, these sounds were used to support learning and memory — helping clear the mental mist and sharpen focus.
Chanting together in a group is one of the most powerful human ways to connect. The beauty is that with today’s online opportunities, there’s more flexibility and accessibility than ever before. You can sing, chant, and connect with kindred spirits, without getting out of your pajamas!
Yes, there’s even a mantra for that!
Plasma — the clear, viscous substance that beads up in tiny droplets on the vaginal walls and flows down the canal — has its own vibrational seed sound.
The seed sound for plasma is the same as the heart cakra:
Yam — pronounced like “yum” in “yummy!”
This sound is connected to plasma in Äyurveda, as well as emotional openness from the most well-known 7 cakra system, which suggests a connection of the physical body and the spiritual heart.
If you wake up from a stress dream feeling drenched in sweat or filled with dread, lean into your mantra until the wave passes. Recognize that what you’re experiencing is a hormonal fluctuation — not a dark night of the soul or a doomsday scenario. The sound will soothe your nervous system back to peace, and keep your racing mind from compelling you into taking unhealthy action.
Sensual Sanskrit sounds and the vibration of your own voice within your body help keep the juices flowing — rekindling a sense of aliveness and pure pleasure for the sake of pleasure itself from the inside out. As many women suffer from performance-based orientation, comparison to others, or appearance self-esteem, tapping into your voice for your own pleasure can be incredibly empowering.

Mantra supports mental and emotional digestion, while Ayurveda supports the physical process. When both are integrated, you cultivate balance on every level. Check out my favorite recipes for kitchari, cleansing mung bean soup, and even dark chocolate healthy brownies for singers.
Sound yoga therapy is a powerful nervous system regulator, helping you flip the switch from unnecessary stress to calm. Whenever you feel stiff, achy, or dull (or sense a cold coming on), nourish yourself deeply — body and soul.
Whenever I feel particularly stiff, achy or dull (or a sniffle coming on), I make healing food and eat it for a day or two. Here’s my go-to kitchari recipe.
The Sanskrit alphabet mantra Purusa can be practiced for both overall well-being and for specific areas of discomfort. The vibrations travel through the body, melting tension and restoring flow.
Perimenopause isn’t a decline — it’s a powerful and important transformation into the third stage of our lives!
Many people discover the power of sound medicine as an empowering, gracious companion through this stage— helping you tune out the noise, connect to your true rhythm, and rediscover the strength and sweetness of your own voice.
Even five minutes of mantra a day can shift your mood, soothe your body, and remind you that you are more than your hormonal roller coaster. You are the heart of sound itself!
