Gemma Perry

Psychology researcher, Gemma Perry, shares her doctoral research and personal experience with the use of mantra for healing the body and mind by creating a sense of community, connection and a deeper relationship with self while motivating the practitioner to seek harmony by pursuing their potential.

“About 60% of the mantra research participants reported extreme alterations in their consciousness. That was across all different traditions – Hindu, Buddhist, and other chanting traditions. We found that people who were experiencing these mystical states were higher in (the category of) altruism… Once you have an experience of feeling connected to everyone, you are going to be a better, kinder person. When you think that we are all connected, you start to treat others as if they were a part of yourself.  It brings a natural connection and kindness.”
GEMMA PERRY is a meditation and yoga teacher currently doing her PhD in the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Gemma investigates the effects of chanting meditations on emotional and cognitive processes. Her interests are primarily in how the chanting of specific sounds can decrease psychological and physiological stress, increase social connection, and ultimately expand states of awareness.

Meenadchi

Author speaks on Non-Violent Communication skills facilitated through a transformative justice and decolonial lens

I think words are really important…our words are spells, so however we put them together they make the spells of our lives, so it's important to phrase them in ways that are true.”
Meenadchi (pronouns: them/they) has worked for over a decade in trauma services and crisis stabilization. Meenadchi’s Non-Violent Communication (NVC) practice began in 2002, and it quickly became a natural fit to weave these magical tools for self-compassion and accountability into Meenadchi’s daily work. Meenadchi's NVC practice lays the groundwork for a somatic and intersectional approach to communication, incorporating tools to divest from shame and to deepen interdependent vulnerability.
